Mastectomy Reconstructive Surgery FAQs

Get the facts about breast reconstruction surgery and whether it’s right for you.

Have you recently undergone a mastectomy to remove invasive breast cancer? If so, you may be wondering if reconstructive breast surgery could be the next step after being told you’re cancer-free. Here’s what you should know about turning to our Garden City, NY, plastic surgeon Dr. Anke Ott Young for mastectomy reconstructive surgery.

What are the benefits of breast reconstruction?

After undergoing surgery to remove cancer from a breast, a woman may choose to have reconstructive surgery to reshape and improve the appearance of her chest. This is also referred to as breast reconstruction surgery. Some of the benefits of breast reconstruction surgery include,

  • Evening out the breasts, so they are more symmetrical and balanced
  • Boost your self-confident
  • Improve the shape of your breast
  • Help you look and feel better in your clothing

Who is a candidate for breast reconstruction?

Many women decide to get mastectomy reconstructive surgery from our Garden City, NY, cosmetic surgeon, but we also know that this option isn’t right for everyone. After undergoing a mastectomy, some women decide that further surgery isn’t right for them.

An ideal candidate will be a healthy individual who has completed chemotherapy or radiation therapy and has realistic goals and expectations from reconstructive surgery. We know this is a big decision, and our Garden City, NY, surgeon can help you decide if this is the right option for you.

How soon after chemo can I get breast reconstructive surgery?

Sometimes reconstructive surgery can occur simultaneously with a mastectomy (also known as an immediate breast reconstruction). This will require us to work closely with your breast cancer surgical team. Most individuals, however, decide to undergo breast reconstructive surgery about 6-12 months after a mastectomy. Again, this is something that our team would be happy to discuss with you during your consultation.

What is the recovery like?

The standard length of recovery is about six to eight weeks, after which most individuals can return to work and their everyday activities. It may take several more weeks before you are cleared for more strenuous activities such as exercise.

We understand that taking the next steps to get a mastectomy reconstructive surgery can feel overwhelming. Let our Garden City, NY, surgeon Dr. Young and the team at Constructive Plastic Surgery answer any questions, address concerns and help you make the best choices regarding your health.
