When Is Breast Reconstruction Needed?

Find out when breast reconstruction may be the ideal option for your needs.

About one in eight women in the US will develop some form of breast cancer during their lifetime. While breast cancer can happen to both men and women, the majority of people affected by the condition are women. After a mastectomy, many women look for ways to improve the appearance of their breasts. Breast reconstruction is one surgical option that our Garden City, NY, and Trumbull, CT, plastic surgeons offer at Constructive Plastic Surgery.

About Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction can be performed on women who have had either a partial or complete mastectomy. This surgery rebuilds the breast, recreating the size and shape of the breast before the mastectomy. Reconstruction can also enhance and improve the appearance of the nipples and areola. The good news is that the majority of women who have undergone a mastectomy are often good candidates for breast reconstruction.

If a mastectomy was only performed on one breast, reconstruction is still possible. However, other cosmetic surgeries such as a breast lift or reduction may be needed to improve the symmetry of both breasts.

Types of Breast Reconstruction in Garden City, NY, and Trumbull, CT

We offer two main types of breast reconstruction: breast implants and flap reconstruction.

  • Breast ImplantsThese implants are often made from saline and increase the shape and volume of the breast. By making a small incision under the breast, underarm, or nipple depending on the type of implant that’s being placed, we can insert the desired implant into the breast either behind or above the chest muscles. Once the implant is in the proper position, we will stitch up the area.
  • DIEP Flap Breast ReconstructionBefore this procedure was available, our plastic surgery team would have to reconstruct the breast by taking skin, tissue, and muscle from the abdomen. Removing the abdominal muscle meant a much longer recovery process and the possibility of complications was higher. However, with DIEP flap reconstruction we only have to remove the skin and tissue from the abdominal area to reshape the breasts. No muscle is removed. This reconstructive procedure offers a more realistic appearance with faster recovery times and fewer complications and side effects than older surgical options.
